A new web portal for business owners, would be entrepreneurs, and service providers to entrepreneurs. It is getting ready to launch on Saturday. If you would like an invitation to become an affiliate–it’s free–just enter your information in the box on the web site.

Are You Sleepworking?

Do you feel like you could do your job in your sleep? Are you bored out of your mind, uninspired and just fed up with the day-to-day drudgery of exchanging your time for a paycheck that never goes far enough?

You are not alone. Millions of people share in your pain. Many dream of owning a business. But do you have what it takes to own and run your own business? Do you know what it takes?

From my years of interviewing entrepreneurs I can tell you, it takes passion, determination, optimism, perseverance, and a lot of creative thinking.

That Four-letter-word

It also takes a willingness to take on something a lot of people don’t like to talk about. It is that dirty word known as RISK.

If you are not willing to accept the risk involved, you will not be able to handle going into business for yourself. You must come to terms with risk, what it means to you and what comes along with it.

Risk is simply the chance that things will not go according to your plan, and you will lose time and money. It is the opposite of security. Security is when you are sure that you will not be wasting time or money, you will be paid and you can count on it. These are both matters of perception.

It’s All Relative

In reality, there is no such thing as security, there is risk everywhere, it is inherent in every moment of life. There is no guarantee that your government will not fail, that the earth will keep turning on its axis, that lightening won’t strike, or you won’t suddenly fall ill.

If you know you had a year to live, would you do anything differently? This is a way of turning your perception of risk on its head. What would security mean in that scenario?

Wake Up

Hopefully we all have a long life ahead of us. Even so, how do we want to spend it? Is there a way to wake up to your work and find new meaning in it, right where you are? Is it possible to add life to your time outside of work that would really be satisfying?

Don’t waste another moment sleepworking. Dream yourself awake by focusing on what is really meaningful to you, and offering your best self each and every moment to the world. You will not regret it.

Have you ever been in a Blizzard?

I still remember the Blizzard of 1977. This one is nothing, so far, compared to that one. We will see what unfolds over the next few days.

This post is for practice, to participate in the ZeroToHero Challenge. I have not followed it religiously, but I am trying to stay plugged in!

Why now?

Why did I start this blog called FreedomPowerJoy? Do you want more Freedom? Do you want more Power? Do you want more Joy? Who doesn’t, you might ask?

Well, based on their actions, many people are more interested in security and stability–even when it comes at the expense of their freedom, their power, and their joy.

Is that too high of a price to pay for security and stability? It is for me, especially when it seems to me that what pass for security and stability are really neither of these.

From 1998 to 2002 I had a great run as a freelance writer. My kids were very young and I wanted to establish a meaningful career. I leveraged my skills, talents and the opportunities I could find and I built a small business for myself.

I had never thought of myself as an entrepreneur. I considered being a writer an artistic endeavor, so I viewed myself more in that light, especially since what I love to write most is poetry.

But in order to make money writing I had to approach it with some business savvy. It helped me immensely that one of the publications I wrote for early on was a regional business newspaper, the now defunct Finger Lakes Business Almanac.

The publisher and editor became a great mentor of mine. He gave me sage advise, plenty of encouragement, and lots of opportunity to write bigger and better articles for him. He also helped me figure out how to sell more of my work elsewhere.

In 2002 my husband died, The Almanac closed its doors, and one of my other major markets for my writing changed their focus and their editor. I was in no position to rally and move forward in spite of this. It was too much loss and my resources were already spread too thin. I had to regroup.

My choice to go into financial services seemed logical, and was working out fairly well until the fall of 2007 when the world economy collapsed. Everyone around me was reeling, I was among the hordes of displaced workers. My children were teenagers and I had to focus on helping them through their hurdles. I hunkered down into whatever job I could find and scrambled to work through some overwhelming issues within my family.

In that process, I developed a different mindset. I started looking at what made me tick and how to work with myself on a more real basis. I came across a remarkable opportunity that took me to China, and then that job ended. After being unemployed for a year looking for the “right” job, I realized, there wasn’t one out there for me. I have to make my own “right” experience.

I realized it is not what I do, but how I do it. I realized I am more free than I know, more powerful than I realize and I can claim joy any and every minute of the day that I choose to do so.

Would you care to join me?

Freedom, Power & Joy

Freedom, Power & Joy.

Freedom, Power & Joy

In my pursuit of my life purpose, to develop and promote Freedom, Power & Joy for myself and others I am developing my new blog. It will focus on how we foster freedom, power and joy in our lives. For me, this means exploring how to be in business for oneself, or transform our view of ourselves in our work life so that we feel the freedom, power and joy of being alive. It has never been enough for me to settle into the job and wait to be promoted or to settle for the status quo, wherever I find myself. I encourage others not to settle, either. This is who I am. My journey in life has connected me with some great friends, supporters, coaches and mentors. In my blog I would like to introduce you to my experience, knowledge and perspectives as I have found them, and hopefully as we connect, you can introduce me to more people who can share this vision. I see a better world emerging all around me. In sharing we all prosper.
